"Proses seleksi masih berlanjut, semua pemain punya peluang. Belum ada yang ditentukan pelatih sebagai pemain inti," ucap dia.
Seperti diketahui, Timnas Indonesia U23 menjalani empat ujicoba terakhir dan menelan kekalahan. Seluruh laga yang dimainkan tandang itu merekor hasil: vs Iran 0-5, vs Iran Yunior 1-2, vs Singapura 0-2, dan Malaysia 0-1.
"Kami akan menunjukkan yang terbaik untuk bangsa ini," tutup Tony.

MotoGP : In the blinking of an eye for Assen
Wednesday, 25 June 2008
First of all, I am sorry for all my friends, that I didn't update my blog for several days, it's kind of going back to the stone age, darkness and emptiness, all because the electricity was off here everyday, and it really killed my mood to write.
OK, Last year Rossi was punching Stoner in Assen straight on the face, instead of his slow and unreliable bike, he won comfortably against Casey Stoner. How about this year (I mean this week).... I bet that there won't be many things change, except Pedros! a and Stoner and Rossi will fight in the front. Some little interesting facts are that Rossi has won here 4 (four) times and also Rossi declared that Assen is his favorite track, the atmosphere is also brilliant. For your info:
--
The Assen circuit is the only present in the calendar which has hosted every year a round of Grand Prix motorcycle racing since its beginnings in 1949 (publicly open in 1955), even though the first "Dutch TT" is ongoing even in 1925.Over the years the track was shortened several times: the first edition, 59 years ago, took on a path of over 16 kilometers, while already from the track next was increased to 7.7 km.
--
One good news is for Loris Capirossi fans, he has already stated he will be ready to race for Assen and that means no seat available for Ben Spies who has made a good step in Donington, if Suzuki is willing to provide a 3rd bike, maybe it will be another great wee! kend for Spies.
Toseland will have an extra energy ! to make a better result after a disaster in turn one in Donington, I think that he was pushing too hard because he was started from back row but in the other hand he has to show to his home crowd that he can do a podium, and in the end, he was being lapped by the front runners, the burden maybe was too heavy for him. Come on Toseland, you can do it champ....:-)
My final point here probably Macio Melandi, he is devastated and I couldn't see any thing worst than this (of what he is having now...) Gibernau is ready and Ducati is ready to give Gibbers a seat, Melandri should find a better way for himself.
Pro20 date saga
The date for the Pro20 semi-final has been finalised. The decision has been made so the Nashua Cape Cobras will face the Titans this Sunday and not Friday as first stated. The reason behind this due to the weather. There has been rain forecast for Friday and if this is the case the match will be postponed and will have be played on Saturday. This won't be able to happen as the Stormers have a Super 14 game then and this will result in a clash and Supersport won't broadcast the game.
Contador: Champion of Italy and France
I wonder whether there's some way Tour de France champion Alberto Contador can be allowed to defend his title this year. He rides for Astana, a team which has not been invited because of a doping scandal last year.
The Spanish rider has further upped his profile by becoming the first non-Italian to win the Giro d'Italia, since 1996, over the weekend. He's now the holder of two of the world's most famous and grueling cycle-tours.
I think it's a pity that he won't compete in France, but I guess authorities have to stick to their guns.
Cape Weather to Play Part in Bulls Clash
Vodacom Western Province are bracing themselves for a wet Currie Cup clash against the Blue Bulls tomorrow.
There's chance of light showers tomorrow morning with a midday high of only 15 degrees which will leave greasy underfoot conditions. The weather will suit the Bulls' forward-orientated style of play while a change of pattern will be necessary for Province who tend to give the ball more air.
WP coach Allister Coetzee says they're going to match the Bulls upfront and that carries some weight given the performance of the Stormers pack during the Super 14. So, that will be the order of the day for Province: m! atch the Bulls upfront, minimise mistakes and give it to the creative backline to score the tries. Simple really...
Kick off is at 17h05.
Too close to call.

As the week draws to an end, the press conferences are spoken for, the teams have been named, and the predictions continue to fly thick and fast, but it is really now down to just 30 people.
When South Africa and the All Blacks meet in test match rugby, it is seldom easy to make a confident prediction. The 2 great rugby nations have a history of hard, uncompromising meetings on a rugby field, and Saturday, August 16 will be no different. I have spent the week with the All Blacks, so can only speak from my experiences, but none of the players are ! prepared to make any strong predictions, which struck me as unusual in the modern world of sports-people doing anything to gain an edge. Every player I chatted to, spoke in humbled tones about pride of being able to have played against the Boks in an All Black jersey, and every player said quietly that to win would be an difficult, and an honour in the ongoing battle between the 2 countries. I cannot wait for the battle to resume, and as far as a result goes, I think it's too close to call.
Rain Expected for Monza
The Formula One circuit moves to Monza this weekend for the Italian Grand Prix amidst controversy and a threat of rain. Monza is descibed by the drivers as the fastest circuit on the calender and it's no surprise when drivers reach speeds of up to 350 kilometres per hour.
Unusually, this may be a race at the famed Autodrome in which the weather plays a role. Thursday will be partly cloudy with an ambient temperature high of 27 degrees Celsius, but there is a possibility of showers for the following three days. On Friday and Saturday the temperature high will drop to 25 and 21 degrees respectively, rising again to 27 on race day.
The race will run over 53 laps of the 5.793 kilometre (3.6 mile) circuit, or 306.720 kilometres (190.596 miles). It starts at 1400 hours local time, which is two hours ahead of GMT.
Win Tickets to Ajax v Arrows
Ajax Cape Town are flying the flag for the Mothercity in the Telkom Knockout Cup. The Urban Warriors are in the quarter-finals after a penalty shootout against Platinum Stars in the first round. Next up it's in-form side, Golden Arrows, at Athlone Stadium on Sunday evening. Kick-off is at 18h00.
We're giving away sets of 4 tickets to the match. All you need to do is email capesport@kfm.co.za. We'll reply to the first 5 emails through.
Good Luck!

Chelsea fail to go top
Chelsea has failed to take their opportunity to go top of the English Premier League last night. The Blues were held to a 0-0 draw against Everton at Goodison Park.
The London side was looking to capitlise on their away form, because before this game they were on a six game unbeaten run.
Even more bad news for the team, Captain John Terry won't be part of the festive season fixtures. He was given a red card after a high tackle on Toffee's midfielder Leon Osman.
The ! Blue's Captain will now miss the their two league games with West Brom and fellow Londoners Fulham, as well as an FA Cup tie with South End in the new year.
According to reports after the match Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari was seething with anger and refused to talk to the media.
After this result Liverpool still top the log with 39 points, Chelsea have 38 points in second place, with Aston Villa third on 34, with current Champions Manchester United on 32 points and have two games in hand.
Breakfast headlines
It wasn't a great weekend for my predictions. The Vodacom Stormers suffered a 4 point defeat to the Crusaders, but Bafana Bafana did get a last minute 2-1 win over Norway.
Krieket:
The Nashua Cape Cobras beat the bizhub Highveld Lions by 6 wickets in the Supersport Series. The Nashua Titans got a 10 wicket win over the Gestetner Diamond Eagles. The Chevrolet Warriors beat the Nashua Dolphins by 231 runs.
England got a 9 wicket win over the West Indies thanks to the Duckworth Lewis method.
India and New Zealand have drawn the second test.
Rugby:
Fiji clinched the Hong Kong Sevens a! fter a 26-24 cvictory over the Springboks in the final. The Boks' talisman, Mzwandile Stick missed a difficult conversion to tie the match.
The Sharks are top of the Super 14 log this morning after the win over the Brumbies. Meanwhile, there's concern within the Australian side with lock Shawn Mackay in a coma after being knocked down in Durban earlier yesterday morning.
Formula One:
It was a dream debut for Brawn GP as Jenson Button won the race followed by teammate Rubens Barrichello. Mclarens' Lewis Hamilton got third after Toyota's Jarno Trulli was penalised.
Marina Bay Circuit: F1 finally has a night race
This weekend Formula One will enter the world of night racing by hosting its first ever night race at the Marina Bay Circuit in Singapore, and it is about time. In the United States, night racing has been a staple particularly in oval racing and at local race events. On a national level, NASCAR, Indy Racing League (IRL), American LeMans Series (ALMS), and Rolex Sportscar Series (GRAND-AM) all have night races and all seem to be very popular with the fans.
Manchester United & Liverpool Scouting Real Sociedad's Antoine Griezmann
Griezmann, a left winger, has burst onto the scene in recent months after being fast-tracked through the club's youth set-up. His rise to prominence has alerted a host of European clubs, and the two Premier League rivals are among the most high-profile to covet his signature.
The Frenchman has been with Real for four years, and enjoyed a productive pre-season. The Spanish club aim to tie the player down to a long-term deal after he impressed in his four appearances so far this season.
He scored on his first start for the club, in the 38th minute, in a fixture against SD Huesca.
The versatile attacker can also be deployed as a striker, but United and Liverpool may face an arduous task ahead in purchasing Gr! iezmann as he recently made it clear that he would like to stay at the San Sebastian-based club.
He said: "Clearly I would like to stay with Real Sociedad.
The grounded youngster added: "I do not believe that I [deserve] a place in the first team."
Torres Undergoes Scan
The 25-year-old's own official website confirmed El Nino completed several laps of the pitch before having treatment with La Furia Roja's physiotherapists as Vicente Del Bosque's side continue to prepare for Wednesday evening's World Cup qualifier with Bosnia.
Torres was substituted during the early stages of the second-half in Saturday's clash with Armenia after reporting groin pain.
However, having undergone physio at the squad hotel on Sunday, an MRI scan gave Liverpool's No.9 the all-clear to join his teammates in last night's light training session.
My Liverpool Will Recover - Houllier
But rather than being flanked by an assistant in the dug-out, he was sitting in the directors' box next to the man who had saved his life.
It is eight years this month since Houllier retired to the Liverpool dressing room at half-time with his team losing 1-0 to Leeds. While his players re-emerged and fought back to earn a point, their manager was being rushed to Broadgreen Hospital, immersed in his own fight.
Houllier was diagnosed as having suffered a! dissection of the aorta and it is down to the skill of heart surgeon Abbas Rashid that he was posing for pictures and signing autographs at Anfield on Tuesday night.
When the draw for the Champions League paired Lyon, the last club Houllier managed, with Liverpool, he instantly knew he would have to be there. And also just who he wanted next to him.
"I was really pleased that the people in charge of the tickets understood the importance of Abbas being with me," said Houllier.
"It was something special for me to have him there. We have become good friends. I go back to the hospital in Liverpool each year for tests and he said I looked well. I feel good. We had a little celebration together."
Elsewhere, the mood was rather more downbeat. The last-gasp defeat by Lyon was Liverpool's fourth in succession and has only served to increase the pressure on Rafa Benitez.
There appear parallels between his tenure and Houllier's r! eign. After finishing second in 2002 Liverpool were unable to ! push on, taking a backwards step the following season under Houllier's command which sowed the seeds for Benitez to succeed him.
The bid to kick on from being runners-up last season is proving similarly fraught. Should Liverpool lose to Manchester United on Sunday, it would be their worst run since September 1953 the season they last tumbled out of the top flight.
Houllier is philosophical about his time at the helm, while confident Benitez will arrest the current malaise.
"I should have taken one year off after my illness," he said. "I came back after five months and it was probably too soon because it was difficult for me. I was tired.
"The sabbatical I had after leaving Liverpool helped me. I did only TV work in France for a year and then went to Lyon and won two championships.
"But I am proud of my time at Liverpool. The reaction of the fans was special for me the other night. I was extremely moved. I always tried to do my! best for them and I think they realised this. I saw Rafa before and after the game. We don't know each other that well, but we respect one another. He seemed okay. He wasn't too down. He understands the situation.
"It will come good. Why? Because it is a big club, a big team and a good staff. I am sure of that.
"Liverpool are depleted by injuries at the moment. I see their games regularly on French television and it was not the same team against Lyon, but a draw would have been a fair result.
"In the big games you need your big players. Liverpool didn't have Steven [Gerrard], Torres and Johnson.
"The team is going through a bad patch. It happens and you are only one game away from a crisis in football today.
"It happens to all the clubs. It will be another team soon because when the injured players are back they will start winning again."
There would be no better time than tomorrow to stop the rot. Houllier ! will be back at Anfield, in mind if not body, for a fixture th! at holds heady personal memories.
Liverpool achieved the league double over their bitter rivals in two successive seasons and the League Cup final win over Ferguson's side at the Millennium Stadium in 2003 was the last of Houllier's six trophies.
"For the fans you have to beat United and Everton and to win these games you need a strong solidarity, cohesion, hard work and humility," said Houllier, who is now back working with the French Football Federation.
"But luck plays a part in it as well. We did well against United. Danny Murphy used to score every season! But I remember the defeats really because they are more difficult to take. You go away analysing what went wrong, trying to understand what happened.
"I can remember losing 2-1 to United at Anfield. And also 4-0 at Old Trafford, when Sami Hyypia was sent off after something like four minutes."
Central to the drama on Sunday will be two of Houllier's former pupils. Michael! Owen's controversial return to the ground where he made his name is a tasty undercard to the main event, while Jamie Carragher will be desperate to ensure his former room-mate leaves empty handed.
"Jamie is the heart of the team. I am very proud of what he has done," said Houllier. "I know he has been criticised this season, but he was good against Lyon. Shouting, organising.
"Steven is a captain in terms of leadership, but Jamie is a captain of competitiveness. He gives the emotion to a game. You saw that in Istanbul in 2005 when even with leg cramps he was still outstanding. He epitomises the spirit of Liverpool."
And Owen? Did Houllier ever think he would see him in a United strip?
"I am pleased for Michael," he added. "As long as Liverpool didn't want him, it is good for him to be at a big club like United.
"He has an enthusiasm for football and, of course, a great goalscoring record."
It is an indicatio! n of just how Liverpool remains ingrained in his soul, however! , that t he thought of Owen wheeling away in celebration would send a shiver down Houllier's spine.'I'm fine now my doctor says I look well'

Facciotti ready for return
From Richmond Racing
ALDERGROVE, BC -- Team Richmond Racing / Kawasaki Canada's Colton Facciotti is set to begin riding within the next week or two. After going for x-rays Tuesday, Facciotti is 100 per cent healed and feeling good.
"It feels good," said Facciotti, who sustained a 'hangman fracture' of his neck in the opening round of the U.S. National Arenacross Series late last year. "My neck isn't stiff and the doctors said I could begin sports activities so I'll probably go riding this weekend.
"If I feel good I might race the last round of the arenacross series up here [in BC]."

Billy Gillespie Rumored for Texas-Pan American Coach Opening
Several media outlets near Edinburg, Texas recently announced that Billy Gillespie is rumored to be one of the candidates for the Texas-Pan American job opening.
I don't know if there's any truth to these rumors but this would be a huge step backward for the former University of Kentucky coach. The Division 1 coach openings are slim right now so Gillespie could be interested and he's familiar with the Texas recruiting scene as he started his career coaching at UTEP and Texas A&M and was ! born and raised in Texas.
Texas-Pan American is a member of the Great West Conference and is coming off a 10-17 season. Texas-Pan American isn't known for there basketball tradition but Gillespie has previous success in turning programs around (i.e. In his three seasons at Texas A&M the team achieved three consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in program history.)
Texas-Pan American's program is currently under an internal investigation for possible NCAA violations. So far, 28 coaches have applied for the position.

NBA All-Star Reserves
I don't mean to just pile on an entry on top of Besse's, but with the All-Star reserves in the NBA being announced tonight I thought I would name the players I felt were deserving. Each conference must have on their bench 2 guard, 2 forwards, 1 center, and then 2 whatever you're feelin'.
First in the Eastern Conference:
Starters: G Jason Kidd, G Dwayne Wade, F Kevin Garnett, F LeBron James, C Dwight Howard.
Don't really have any problems here. Take a look at the backcourt though with their combined 28 wins.
G Chauncey Billups (17.9 pts., 7.1 assists)
G Joe Johnson (21.2 pts., 4.4 rebs., 5.3 assists)
F Paul Pierce (20.1 pts., 5.7 rebs., 5 assists)
F Caron Butler (21.9 pts., 7 rebs., 4.3 assists)
C Chris Bosh (22.7 pts., 9.1 rebs.)*
F Antawn Jamison (21.4 pts., 10.6 rebs.)
F Josh Smith (18 pts., 8.1 rebs., 3.2 blocks)
*I know Chris Bosh is a forward, I'm p! utting him in as a center. Other very deserving players include Richard Hamilton, Ray Allen, Jose Calderon, Michael Redd, Richard Jefferson, and Hedo Turkoglu.
Western Conference:
Starters: G Kobe Bryant, G Allen Iverson, F Carmelo Anthony, F Tim Duncan, C Yao Ming.
How Chris Paul is not starting is beyond me. Fan voting is for the birds. My subs are
G Chris Paul (20.8 pts., 3.9 rebs., 10.7 assists)
G Steve Nash (17.4 pts., 11.9 asts., 48% 3FG)
F Carlos Boozer (22.4 pts., 10.6 rebs., 55% FG)
F Dirk Nowitzki (22.3 pts., 8.6 rebs.)
C Marcus Camby (9.3 pts., 14.3 rebs., 3.9 blocks)
F/C Amare Stoudemire (22.7 pts., 9 rebs., 59.5% FG)
G Baron Davis (22.3 pts., 4.8 rebs., 8.1 assists)
Just missing the cut: Brandon Roy (he needs to be there somehow), Deron Williams, Josh Howard, Stephen Jackson, Shawn Marion, Chris Kamen, and Tyson Chandler.!
We'll have to wait and see until tonigh! t who th e coaches pick.
Rich Keefe
The Sports Brief's Week 8 NFL picks
The Sports Brief hits the road this weekend. We will be up at Jillian's tomorrow night in Manchester, NH to watch the execution of Patrick Cote. Anderson Silva will play the role of executioner. All kidding aside, Cote does have boulders for hands and a chin of granite, so it could be fairly exciting. If he get inside the long reach of Silva, you never know what will happen. Mark Delagrotte is a master of gameplans, so perhaps this will be just a taste of what he brings to the table if Kenny Florian ever gets to match up against BJ Penn.
On Sunday, we take our act to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA for a rematch (of sorts) between the St. Louis Rams and your New England Patriots. Should be interesting to see if there's a letdown for either team. The Pats have scored some impressive wins and followed that up with horrible losses. The Rams, meanwhile, are streaking under new head coach Jim Haselett. Steven Jackson is questionable, and I would assume that every Patri! ots fans is hoping he's unable to go. The last thing the Pats need is another Ronnie Brownesque performance. Anyway, onto the picks. Keefe and I have been taking a beating as of late. Let's hope it gets better.
Keefe's picks:
Last Week: 5-9 overall: 48-54

Obama's first pitch at the 2009 All-Star Game
Alright, normally this wouldn't be a hot topic with me. But I made a few observations during Obama's first pitch at the All-Star game last night.
I know it's wrong to poke fun at a guy that served our country and ended up looking like a T-rex because of it, but seriously, do you think HE could reach the friggin plate? They wouldn't even send him to the mound. MLB would leave the batting practice mound 15 feet in front of the rubber and have him roll it in from there with the catcher squatting down 5 feet in front of home plate. He's lucky he can wipe his own ass (can he?), nevermind throw a baseball like a man.
But my most astute observation came when Obama went to greet Stan Musial. Watch the interaction again and tell me that Musial's driver is not a friggin Republican. Have you ever seem someone so disinterested in the fact that the President of the United States is standing 2 feet away? He looked like he truly could not care. For all I know, he's been there, done t! hat. If that's the case, excuse me Billy Big League, no need t! o show u s all up like that. But let's be honest, that's the first time he's ever come within a zip code of the President. By his reaction, or lack thereof, he clearly didn't vote for Obama. In fact, I started to wonder if the guy might have a baretta taped down underneath his seat. Obama almost had to hit the guy to get his attention and shake his hand. Check it out for yourself around the :20 second mark...
And here's GW at Opening Day in Arlington, TX this season...
He threw a dart and filled up the zone. Gotta love the quick windmill stretch before the pitch. Solid stuff. But perhaps his best, and most significant work came on October 30, 2001 at Yankee Stadium. Bush tossed the first pitch before Game 3 of the World Series against Arizona. And not only did he toss a pea in there, but the crowd chanting "USA! USA! USA!" at the end was pretty cool stuff. Regardless of how he was as President, you almost had to love! the guy. He's a man's man.

ICC Champions Trophy: England take surprise victory and moral high ground over Sri Lanka
England (213-4) beat Sri Lanka (212) by six wickets
Written off as no-hopers in the build-up to this tournament, England managed to come out of Friday night's one-day international in fine fettle. Not only had they scored a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka, one of the form horses in the competition, but they took the moral high ground when Andrew Strauss recalled all-rounder Angelo Mathews to the crease.
Strauss's sporting gesture came about after a collision in mid-pitch between Mathews and Graham Onions had left the batsman stranded.
!Mathews had been turning for an ill-advised second run to midwicket a run that would probably have been impossible at the best of times. But he felt that the body contact had been decisive, and remonstrated with the umpires. Although Billy Bowden and Aleem Dar agreed that the wicket should stand, Strauss consulted with his team-mates and decided to overturn the decision.
As England's players gathered after their initial appeal, there must surely have been some discussion of last summer's debacle at the Oval, where Ryan Sidebottom virtually rugby-tackled New Zealand's Grant Elliott as he set off for a sharp single. The captain that day, Paul Collingwood, faced opprobrium for insisting that the run-out decision should stand.
But there was a marked difference between's Sidebottom's actions deliberately stepping into the runner's path and those of Onions, simply moving back to cover the bowler's stumps.
Perhap! s Strauss felt that English cricket should not be guilty of th! e same mistake twice. And while he may have been overly generous in his call, you had to admire his generous instincts. It was better he erred in that direction than the other, and he received a warm response from the crowd.
While the merits of the decision will be debated, it did not affect the outcome of the match, especially as Mathews lasted only three more balls before edging to the wicketkeeper. England had the game under control for most of the night, after winning a useful toss and snatching four wickets inside the first six overs.
Although Sri Lanka showed nerve and toughness to fight back from 17 for four to post a total of 212 all out, that was always a gettable total. As England proved during the deadly grind of the NatWest Series, they can make 220s and 230s for fun; it is the 280-plusses that make their noses bleed.
Strauss must have been delighted to continue his run at the toss (which now stretches to 11 pos! itive outcomes in 13). The surface had the sort of colour and pace that used to characterise the Wanderers in the 1980s, the days when the pitch here was known as "the green mamba". If England were going to beat Sri Lanka a vastly more experienced and rounded unit these were the conditions to do it in. And James Anderson, who can control the moving ball as well as anyone, lived up to his billing in an opening spell of 7-2-11-2. Finding venomous outswing off a length, he looked as if he might take a wicket with each delivery.
England's innings started nervously. After Strauss's gesture of goodwill earlier, he might have felt cheesed off that he was the subject of a huge and unjustified caught-behind appeal in the second over. Perhaps Sri Lanka thought they heard something, but the way they pressurised the umpire was unedifying.
Strauss soon fell victim to a superb and indisputable one-handed catch at midwicket! , whereupon England received a boost from a feisty Paul Col! lingwood . Opening his account with a six flicked over midwicket, he lifted the scoring rate with a series of booming boundaries. Perhaps he was fired up by some of the criticism that has been coming his way; if so, the extra motivation worked in his favour, because he won the match-award for his 46 from 51 balls.
Shah took an age to get going and performed some of his usual tricks between the wickets. At one point, he lost his footing on the dewy turf while backing up, and had to virtually swim back into the crease. But he anchored the innings, and Eoin Morgan finished off a commendable all-round effort with 62 not out. If England can beat South Africa on Sunday, they will be in the semi-finals.
"I didn't see it at the time because I was watching the ball, but I saw the replay and the umpires said, 'It's up to you if you want to call him back'," said Strauss. "My feeling was that it just didn't look right. I thought he would have got back! for the two quite comfortably if they hadn't collided. Other captains would be quite within their rights to not call him back, but after Paul Collingwood was castigated for doing that a couple of years ago, I decided it wasn't the right thing to do."
Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara said: "I thought it was an excellent piece of sportsmanship. I think in the end the right decision was made. There was a clear two there, and while it [the collision] might have been an accident it all depends how it was done."
Fiorentina 2 Liverpool 0
The Champions League game between Fiorentina and Liverpool at Stadio Artemio Franchi on Tuesday Sept 29, 2009.
How the mighty fall. Liverpool , for five years the doughty scourge of Europe, conquerors of Nou Camp, the San Siro and the Bernabeu, arrived in Florence as heroes, lionised by their awestruck opposition. Late on Tuesday, they departed a city which remains uncharted territory by Champions League standards, outplayed and humiliated, their mana! ger's fury and indignation ringing in their ears.
"The first half was the worst performance I have seen in my time here," said manager Rafael Benitez. "We were doing everything wrong. Fiorentina pressed us well and made us make mistakes. When you make mistakes at this level, you get punished. I was not happy with the challenging all over the pitch in the first half. The mentality was not good enough. We were too nervous. They did well, but we did everything badly."
The sense of disappointment among Fiorentina's boisterous, deafening following was almost palpable. They were expecting an exhibition from the ambassadors of the Premier League road show, to see their side steamrollered by the English juggernaut. Instead, amid the smoke bombs and the flares, an unheralded 19 year-old exposed every single one of Liverpool's frailties.
"We knew Stevan Jovetic was a good player," insisted Benitez. "At this level, you know all! the players. We had watched the tapes, so we knew what to ! expect."
They might have known, but they could do little to stop. In the Champions League, even in a group stage dismissed as little more than a procession for England's footballing nobility, knowledge is not always power.
In truth, Jovetic barely featured on English radar 24 hours ago. Devoted Manchester United and Arsenal fans may have been vaguely aware of him, his name having been mentioned in dispatches as part of both clubs' global trawl for talent. His presence hardly struck fear into the hearts of the visiting supporters. Besides, Italy, as we have been told so often, has been robbed of its jewels.
Not quite. Kaka and Zlatan Ibrahimovic may be gone to join the galaxy of stars in La Liga, but on this evidence they have an heir in waiting. In Florence, the fans call him the Montenegrin Messi. The rest will soon follow suit.
Little wonder. His two first half goals, both expertly taken, were rich reward for a per! formance which the scampering Argentine would have been proud to call his own. Full of energy, invention and promise, he bamboozled a teetering Liverpool backline.
He was helped, no doubt, by Benitez's side's uncharacteristic nervousness. They hesitated on the ball, misplaced simple passes and, within 20 minutes, had resorted to the sort of direct, hit-and-hope style which made English sides figures of fun for so long in the continent's grand old houses.
Having forced the jittery Martin Skrtel into blocking one shot, from the ensuing corner he skimmed a perfectly-judged cross to the waiting Marco Marchionni, whose audacious overhead kick rippled the top of the net. The teenager came within inches of connecting with Adrian Mutu's low, driven cross. The warning signs were there.
Liverpool failed to pay heed. Cristiano Zanetti robbed the dithering Lucas, slid the ball between both centre backs to an unguarded Jovetic, wh! o delicately took his prize.
Within 10 minutes, he! had ben efited from Glen Johnson's naivety when faced with Europe's sophisticates to double the lead. The full-back, drawn inside by Marchionni's teasing cross, naively left Juan Vargas unmarked on the left. The Peruvian fired the ball back in to the box, where Jovetic's deft touch steered it into a spot between Pepe Reina and the post.
Liverpool were shell-shocked. Welcomed on to the pitch before kick-off with a banner describing how the club's "story is a legend" to Fiorentina's fans and serenaded with a rendition of "Amo Liverpool," perhaps they had been fooled into thinking respect was a sign of weakness, an indication that Fiorentina were simply glad to be on the same pitch as the giants of the Premier League.
The death of Serie A, though, may have been greatly exaggerated. Liverpool simply could not match Fiorentina's intensity, especially in attack. Benitez's players seemed caught between displaying the instincts which have ! brought them such a haul of goals at home and obeying the more cautious instructions the Spaniard had detailed to them here.
The Liverpool manager was at pains before the game to illustrate that his teams have always been offensively-minded, always capable of scoring goals, but there has been a tangible change of emphasis. Now, they go for the jugular. Perhaps a team built for domestic combat is no longer as sturdy on foreign soil. Perhaps, in the home of Macchiavelli, Benitez allowed himself to indulge his inner plotter.
"We were better in the second half," he said. "We had some chances because we knew that could get us back into the game."
Steven Gerrard and Yossi Benayoun, though, failed to convert the handful of openings the visitors did manage to create. Liverpool, in truth, never looked like becoming the first English side to score here, let alone record an unlikely win.
Fiorentina would not have dese! rved that, in any case. This was their, and Jovetic's, nigh! t. By th e time the final whistle went and their fans broke into another chorus hailing their vanquished opponents, it seemed to have taken a gently mocking edge. A lot of teams would love Liverpool if they always played like this.
India beat Canada again, take 3-0 lead
India scored a 2-0 win against Canada in the fourth Test and secured a 3-0 lead in the seven-match series at Tamanawis Par.
Vikram Pillay scored from a penalty stroke in the 22nd minute while Rajpal Singh shot home in the 38th minute to script India's victory.
India had won the first two matches and played a 4-4 draw in the third Test match.
Canada began aggressively winning a penalty corner in the third minute after goalkeeper Sreejesh made a dangerous save from Ranjeev Deol's shot a! t goal.
The Indian defence stood out as they blocked the indirect attempt from Scott Tupper.
The Canadians won their second of six penalty corners after Philip Wright was stopped by Bharat Chhikara but Sreejesh brought off a splendid save.
India could have broken the ice midway in the first half after Gurwinder Chandi powered his way into the striking circle but Vikram Pillay was a trifle late at the second post.
However, India got a penalty stroke when Chandi was tripped by Canada goalkeeper Matt Peck in the 22nd minute.
Pillay shot in to the custodian's left to give India the lead.
The visitors had two more opportunities to increase the lead before half time, but on the first, a penalty corner ball pull in was not stopped, while Tushar Khandker missed on a goalmouth scramble later.
The second half saw India in total domination of the proceedings with quality midfield and backup play highlighted by captain Dhahanjay Mahadik,! Gurbaj Singh and Sardar Singh.
Prabhjot Singh grabbed ! the ball from close to the centre line body feinting and dribbling past a host of Canadian players before setting up Rajpal Singh three minutes into the second half.
The wily Chandigarh winger smashed the ball past Peck from the edge of the circle to make it 2-0 for the Indians.
Rajpal had another opportunity to score when he combined with Bharat cutting into the circle from the left flank but his shot was well taken by Peck.
India were awarded their second penalty corner when Prabhjot was obstructed by Wayne Fernandes but Sandeep Singh flicked wide.
Canada bolstered their attacks winning corners in quick succession but the Indian defence, particularly Sreejesh, rose to the occasion.
The fifth Test will be played at the same venue on Sunday.
Watford 4 Sheffield Wednesday 1
The Championship clash between Watford and Sheffield Wednesday at Vicarage Road on Friday Oct 23, 2009.
The Championship table can be perversely misleading. Watford, marooned in mid-table, dismantled Sheffield Wednesday with the panache of title contenders.
There was liveliness and flair to Watford's play, characterised by snappy interchanges, sublime passing and fluid movement. Two goals from teenager, Henri Lansbury, and strikes from Jon Harley and Adrian Mariappa, saw them sweep to a second league victory in seven matches.
That record is bewildering. To behold Watford at times was a delight although they were ungainly in opening the scoring. John Eustace, an early substitute for Ross Jenkins, scuffed the ball into the area and Adrian Mariappa turned it home.
Finesse, however, was not caged for long. Minutes later Lansbury, a pupil of Arsene Wenger's expressionist football, played a one-two with Tom Cleverley, tip-toed past a static Wednesday defence and netted.
Watford will not want to hand Lansbury back to Arsenal when his loan expires. They should try to persuade Manchester United to extend Cleverley's stay too. The pair wreaked havoc.
Beneath Watford's exuberance, though, lies defensive frailty, epitomised when Marcus Tudgay headed in Tommy Spurr's long throw. Yet class told again in the second period. Lansbury nonchalantly found Jon Harley, whose shot found the top corner.
Then Cleverley left two! Wednesday defenders for dead before finding Lansbury to co! nvert. W ednesday's insipidness was overshadowed by Watford's excellence.
Match details
Watford (4-4-1-1): Loach; Hodson, Mariappa (capt), Cathcart, Doyley; Cleverley, Jenkins (Eustace 19), Lansbury, Harley (Severin 83); Cowie (Ellington 77); Graham. Subs: Bennett, Henderson, Bryan, Bond (g).
Sheffield Wednesday (4-4-2): Grant; Buxton, Purse (capt), Beevers, Spurr; Gray (Esajas 49), O'Connor (Miller 46), Potter, Johnson (Sodje 63); Varney, Tudgay. Subs: Hinds, McAllister, Jeffers, O'Donnell (g).
India I-League Review
Dempo Sports Club moved to the top of the I-League table with a 2-1 victory away to JCT in Ludhiana.
Joaquim Abranches put Dempo in front, heading in a corner kick from Clifford Miranda in the 42nd minute.
Dempo then piled on the pressure in the second half and JCT defender Gurwinder Singh felled Anthony Pereira in the area prompting a penalty in the 70th minute.
Sunil Chettri stepped up to convert to double the lead, before Baljit Singh Sahni reduced the ma! rgin two minutes later for JCT.
Pune FC fought out another draw - their fourth in as many matches - holding Churchill Brothers 1-1.
Odafe Okolie powered Churchill ahead in the 44th minute, but Pune were ensured a point when Churchill goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya fumbled a shot from Edmar Figueira, the ball trickling over the line.
At the Cooperage, Mumbai FC's Abhishek Yadav scored twice to help his team secure a 2-2 draw against Air India.
Air India forged ahead through a strike from ND Opara in the 36th minute, but Abhishek Yadav scored twice in the space of eight minutes late in the second half to put Mumbai in front.
Opara then converted a contentious penalty a minute from time to hand Air India a point.
Mixed fortunes for duo in Valencia
There were mixed fortunes for Barclays ATP World Tour Finals contenders Fernando Verdasco and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Valencia Open today.
Verdasco is currently occupying the last of the eight qualifying places for the prestigious end-of-season tournament in London later this month, which features the top players from 2009.
And the Spaniard had an easy time of things today in his first-round match against Oscar Hernandez, losing only two games before his opponent! retired with Verdasco leading 6-1 0-1.
It was a different story for Frenchman Tsonga, though, who faces a race to be fit for next week's Paris Masters, the final points-scoring event, after retiring in the third set of his match against Mikhail Youzhny with a left wrist injury.
Things began well enough for the third seed when he took the first set on a tie-break but he did not win another game and called it a day with Youzhny leading 6-7 (3/7) 6-0 3-0.
Gilles Simon, who is an outside bet to appear at the O2, kept his faint hopes alive with a hard-fought 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory over Tomas Berdych to become the first man to reach the quarter-finals.
Sixth seed Gael Monfils was a second-round casualty, though, the Frenchman going down 6-2 7-5 to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
In other first-round matches, Janko Tipsarevic beat Victor Hanescu 6-4 6-3 while Feliciano Lopez saw off qualifier Alberto Martin 7-5 6-3 in an all-Spanish encounter.

Ronaldo to Replace Brand Beckham?
by brono pisino
You've seen him in advertising campaigns for Nike, Coke, FIFA Street 2, Extra Joss, and of course, his bare-chested appeal in the Pepe Jeans ad. According to advertising and marketing experts and football agents, Cristiano Ronaldo has the 'X factor' that could well replace David Beckham as the footballer who earns the most from endorsements. Considering Ronaldo's teenybopper appeal and this age group's importance as the advertisers' main target audience, it might just happen... and soon. Experts feel there is currently a need for a central soccer brand. Beckham's 34 years of age and current career phase doesn't exactly make him a hot youth icon anymore. Sure, no one can deny his good looks and knee weakening ability among adults, but he's past the stage of driving 13 year olds crazy. And that's where Ronaldo can step in and fill Beck's shoes. The 24 year old Portuguese has all the right qualities to appeal to kids and teens - he's a looker, has a g! reat body, plays well and is part of an extremely popular and successful team.
If Becks raked in $42.5 million through product endorsements last year, Ronaldo earned $19.6 million. But now that this 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year has become the world's most expensive player after his transfer from Man U to Real Madrid, his worth has sky rocketed. When Ronaldo was 'unveiled' on the 6th of July at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium wearing Real's soccer uniforms, nearly 80,000 screaming teens and young adults were there to greet him!
Actually, Ronaldo seems to be following in Beckham's footsteps in more ways than one! Becks left Man U for a successful stint with Real, so did Ronny boy! Becks wore the number 7 soccer shirt at Man U, as did Ronaldo after him! Becks was the ultimate youth icon, as Ronaldo is slated to be! If there's anything that can go against this young man, it's his lack of 'family life' and the accusation that he's not much of a team player.! This could bring his appeal down among advertisers. Beckham c! ontinues to shine in that arena with his image of a happy family man and his reputation as a great team player. For this reason, some experts would like to see Ronaldo settled and married to a nice girl! But, at the end of the day, it's his on field performance that will determine his success as brand Beckham's successor. After all, you're only as good as your last match... And companies are looking for endorsements from soccer stars so they can associate their product with the star's phenomenal success. As far as veteran football agent, Jon Holmes, is concerned, "Ronaldo is a good looking guy and I would say his level of articulateness is about the same as Beckham's... He is probably a better player than Beckham in that he is more versatile. Beckham is a workhorse of a player, Ronaldo seems to be a more natural player."
Well, let's see if Ronaldo is going to be the next big clothes horse after Becks! Time will tell...

CRIBARI 6,5
Gioco pulito senza amnesie. Preziosissimo e lucido nei minuti finali.
KOLAROV 6
LICHTSTEINER n.g.
BALLARDINI 6
"Dovremo essere veloci e profondi in attacco" aveva detto in conferenza stampa pre-gara. Purtroppo non è accaduto. La formazione di Pechino stavolta non ha "portato bene". Con questo schieramento il possesso palla è comunque favorevole agli avversari (la percentuale alla fine della partita parla chiaro) e la Lazio sembra meno arrembante.
Sampdoria: Castellazzi 7; Stankevicius 6, M.Rossi 6, Lucchini 6, Ziegler 7; Mannini 6,5, Poli 6,5, Palombo 7, Padalino 5,5; Cassano 6, Pazzini 7. Zauri 6
All.: Delneri 7
Arbitro: Orsato 5
I TIFOSI
